The Galena Park Yellowjackets will head out to challenge the Waltrip Rams at 7:00 p.m. on Friday. Keep an eye on the score for this one: the two teams posted some lofty point totals in their previous games.
On Thursday, Galena Park got the win against Spring Woods by a conclusive 34-14. The win made it back-to-back victories for the Yellowjackets.
Cary Clay continued his habit of posting crazy stat lines, rushing for 229 yards and a pair of scores while picking up 14.3 yards per carry. His longest rush was for an incredible 94 yards. The team also got some help courtesy of Kendall Combs, who threw for 70 yards and two TDs on only six passes.
They were just one part of a punishing run game: Galena Park was unstoppable on the ground and finished the game with 301 rushing yards. That strong performance was nothing new for the team: they've now rushed for at least 291 rushing yards in five consecutive contests.
The home team had come away the winner the last five times Waltrip and Sharpstown had met, but sadly for the fans who attended this one that wasn't the case. The Rams claimed a resounding 49-20 victory over the Apollos. With the Rams ahead 42-6 at the half, the matchup was all but over already.
Waltrip's win came from a few key players Galena Park will need to keep an eye on. One of the most notable was Zyon Gamble, who rushed for 72 yards and a pair of touchdowns on only eight carries. The dominant performance also gave him a new career-high in rushing touchdowns (two). Another player making a difference was James 'Jimmy' Haren, who rushed for 24 yards and one score.
Waltrip didn't go easy on the quarterback and picked off two passes before the game was over. The picks came courtesy of Justin Henry and Keshuan Palmer. Waltrip received some extra help from Antonio Adame, whose fumble return for a touchdown made for one of the most unforgettable moments.
Galena Park's record now sits at 2-4. As for Waltrip, their record is now 4-1.
Friday's game might be decided on the ground. Galena Park has been unstoppable on the ground this season, having averaged 287.7 rushing yards per game. However, it's not like Waltrip struggles in that department as they've been averaging 160 rushing yards. There's a good chance Friday's contest turns into a tough fight on the ground.
Galena Park lost to Waltrip on the road by a decisive 42-27 margin when the teams last played back in October of 2024. Thankfully for the Yellowjackets, Braylon Wilson (who rushed for 234 yards and one TD while picking up 10.2 yards per carry) won't be suiting up this time.
