Orange Vista is on a three-game streak of home wins, while Western is on a six-game streak of away wins: one of those streaks is about to end. The Orange Vista Coyotes will take on the Western Pioneers at 7:00 p.m. on Friday. Both squads will be entering this one on the heels of a big victory.
With a playoff game on the line, Orange Vista rose to the challenge on Friday. They breezed by San Jacinto on the road to the tune of 49-17. With Orange Vista ahead 35-10 at the half, the matchup was all but over already.
Orange Vista's success was the result of a balanced attack that saw several players step up, but Khalil Abdul-aziz led the charge by throwing for 240 yards and five touchdowns on only 17 passes. The team also got some help courtesy of Sire Gaines, who rushed for 168 yards and a touchdown while picking up 8.0 yards per carry.
Meanwhile, Western was fully in charge on Friday, breezing past Apple Valley 49-19 at home. The matchup was all but wrapped up at the end of the third, by which point Western had established a 22 point advantage.
Multiple players turned in solid performances to lead Western to victory, but perhaps none more so than Anthony Luna, who threw for 147 yards and three touchdowns, and also punched in a touchdown on the ground. Luna has been hot recently, having posted three or more passing touchdowns the last seven times he's played. Jj Amezcua was another key contributor, picking up 90 receiving yards and three touchdowns.
Another reason for the win was Western's imposing defense, which managed to get into the backfield for six sacks. Apple Valley's QB won't forget Amezcua anytime soon given Amezcua sacked him three times.
Their wins bumped Orange Vista to 9-3 and Western to 11-1.
Keep an eye on the end zone in Friday's game as both teams haven't had much trouble getting there this season. Orange Vista commands a daunting offense this season, having averaged 5 touchdowns per game. However, it's not like Western struggles in that department as they've been even better at 6.2 per game. With these two high-octane teams facing off on Friday, fans should be in for an exciting offensive matchup. Check MaxPreps after the action for a full breakdown of the game and more football content.
