Ankeny moved on to the Class 4-A semifinals after a 35-21 win over Ames in the quarterfinals Friday night. The Hawks are in the state semifinals for the sixth time in the last eight years.
The Hawks play West Des Moines Valley next, a 32-27 quarterfinal winner over cross-town rival Dowling Friday night. Valley is in the semifinals for the ninth time in the last 10 years.
Cedar Falls advanced to the play in the 4-A semifinals with a 43-6 conquest of Cedar Rapids Xavier Friday night at the UNI-Dome. The Xavier Saints (8-4) were their own worst enemy against the sixth-ranked Tigers (11-1), committing six turnovers.
Cedar Falls next plays Cedar Rapids Washington, a 48-27 winner over Bettendorf in the 4-A round of eight.
Class 3-A winners included top-ranked Sioux City Heelan over Harlan 38-21, second-ranked Clear Lake over Carroll 27-12, Decorah past Cresco-Crestwood 21-7, and Pella got past Mount Pleasant 19-5.
In the Heelan victory over Harlan, Iowa recruit Brandon Wegher ran a career-high 39 times, scoring four touchdowns, but finished with a season-low 178 yards for the Crusaders.
In Class 2-A, Central Lyon/George-Little Rock (12-0) broke open a 7-7 tie with a pair of touchdowns late in the second quarter en route to a 28-7 win over Okoboji of Milford Friday night in the quarterfinal round.
CL/G-LR risks its unbeaten record against another unbeaten team in the semifinals, as it plays IKM-Manilla in the semifinal round at the UNI-Dome next Monday, Nov. 17. IKM-Manilla shut out Missouri Valley 25-0 in its quarterfinal round contest.
Solon easily made its way into the Class 2-A semifinals with a 52-27 quarterfinal win over Mid-Prairie Friday night in Solon. The unbeaten and top-ranked Spartans (12-0) received 282 yards on the ground from running back James Morris. They play Roland-Story in the semis.
There will be a new football champion in Class 1-A, after West Lyon ousted two-time defending champ Council Bluffs St. Albert 28-21 Friday night at Inwood. Jason Koedam’s three-yard touchdown run with just over two minutes remaining was the difference in the quarterfinal victory.
In the semifinals, West Lyon will play Prairie Valley of Gowrie, who defeated Pella Christian 28-21 in the quarterfinals.
The run of the Aplington-Parkersburg Falcons (11-1) came to an end on Friday when Emmetsburg defeated the Falcons in the Class 1-A playoffs 14-6 at Emmetsburg. Aplington-Parkersburg was top-ranked in the classification entering the game.
Emmetsburg plays West Branch in the semifinals at the UNI-Dome, after a 39-6 state quarterfinal win by West Branch over Maquoketa Valley. It’s the sixth time in the semifinals for West Branch (11-1), who has won three state championships.
Third-ranked Southern Cal is on to the Class A semifinals after a 21-6 win over 10th-ranked Alta last Friday night. Southern Cal moved its season mark to 11-1, as it controlled the contest with a 14-0 halftime lead.
Up next is 11-1 Madrid in the semifinals on Saturday at the UNI-Dome. Madrid advanced with a 42-27 victory over A-H-S-T-Avoca in the quarterfinals. Cody Matthewson ran for 199 of Madrid’s 526 rushing yards in the victory and scored three touchdowns.
North Tama prevailed in its Class A quarterfinal game over HLV Friday, 19-0 at Traer. It was the second straight shutout for the second-ranked Redhawks, a team that has allowed only 50 points the entire season, posting seven shutouts in the process.
Eight-man winners were Armstrong-Ringstead, defending champion Stanton, Corwith/C-W-L and Lenox.
Girls Swimming: Valley, Harris Claim State Title
West Des Moines Valley claimed the state girls swimming title in Marshalltown on Saturday, its fourth straight team championship. The Tigers of Valley beat the Cedar Falls Tigers for the team crown, 316-201.
Valley’s Danielle Harris was the star of the meet, as she claimed All-America honors with qualifying times in the 200-yard medley relay, 200-yard individual medley, the 100 backstroke and the 200 freestyle relay.
She also earned state records in the 200-yard individual medley and the 100 backstroke. She was named the swimmer of the year by the Iowa State Swimming Coaches Association.
Bethany Olson of Cedar Falls won the one-meter state diving title with a score of 476.50 points.
Wrestling: Carew Commits to Iowa
Iowa City West wrestling standout Dylan Carew won’t be going far for his collegiate wrestling career. Carew announced late last week he’ll be wrestling for the Iowa Hawkeyes.
Carew, a senior, won a state championship in 2006 and has been a three-time state place winner. Dylan’s career record entering this season is 121-11. With the Trojans, he’s been on two traditional state championships and two dual-meet team state winners.
