Vienna is 0-8 against Benton since March of 2017 but things could change on Wednesday. The Eagles will welcome the Rangers at 4:30 p.m. Vienna is strutting in with some hitting muscle as they've averaged 9 runs per game this season.
Things were looking good for Vienna after they put the first points on the board on Tuesday, but unfortunately for them things went downhill from there. They fell 6-3 to Massac County. Eagles fans who chose to attend the game sure picked the wrong one: it was the first time the team's lost against the Patriots since on Tuesday.
Alli Vinson spent all seven innings on the mound, and it's clear why: she surrendered four earned (and two unearned) runs on six hits.
At the plate, Rayonna Ridley made the most of her time at bat despite the final result and went 2-for-3 with one home run and two runs. That home run marked the first that she launched this season. Another player making a difference was Anniston Steinmann, who went 1-for-4 with one triple and one RBI.
Meanwhile, there's no place like home for Benton, who bounced back after a loss on the road on Friday. They put the hurt on Pope County with a sharp 16-6 victory on Tuesday. Considering the Rangers have won five matches by more than five runs this season, Tuesday's blowout was nothing new.
Avery Thomas (2027) made a big impact no matter where she played. She didn't allow a single earned run while striking out eight over five innings pitched. Thomas (2027) was also stellar in the batter's box, going 3-for-4 with three RBI and two doubles.
In other batting news, Benton let Jaycee Webb (2027) and Marli Klus (2025) run wild. Webb (2027) got on base in four of her five plate appearances with three stolen bases, three runs, and four RBI, while Klus (2025) went a perfect 4-for-4 with four RBI, one triple, and one run. Webb (2027) is on a roll when it comes to stolen bases, as she's now snagged at least one in each of the last three games she's played. Malia Webb (2025) was another key player, scoring three runs and stealing two bases while getting on base in three of her five plate appearances.
Benton hit smart and finished the game with only two strikeouts. They are a perfect 3-0 when they post two or more strikeouts.
Benton's win was their fourth straight at home, which pushed their record up to 5-4. The home victories came thanks in part to their hitting performance across that stretch, as they averaged 17.3 runs over those games. As for Vienna, this is the second loss in a row for them and nudges their season record down to 4-8.
Wednesday's contest will be a test for both teams' pitchers. Vienna hasn't had any issues making contact this season, having earned a batting average of .333. However, it's not like Benton struggles in that department as they've averaged .466. With both teams so capable at the plate, fans should be ready for an impressive hitting performance.
