The La Joya Coyotes waltzed into their match on Friday with two straight wins but they left with three. They took down Economedes 72-54. Given La Joya's advantage in MaxPreps' Texas basketball rankings (they are ranked 545th, while the Jaguars are ranked 1239th), the result wasn't entirely unexpected.
It was another big night for Daniel Trevino, who scored 19 points along with seven assists and five rebounds. He hasn't dropped below two steals for three straight games. Another player making a difference was Owen Benoit, who scored 14 points along with five rebounds and two steals.
Despite the loss, Economedes still got an impressive performance from Nathaniel De La Garza, who scored 23 points along with three steals. De La Garza continues to roll, besting his previous point total in each of the last three games he's played. The team also got some help courtesy of Alexandro Zurita, who scored six points along with six rebounds.
La Joya has been performing incredibly well recently as they've won ten of their last 11 matchups, which provided a massive bump to their 21-14 record this season. As for Economedes, they are on a eight-game losing streak that has dropped them down to 12-18.
La Joya will head out on the road to square off against the Eagles at 7:30 p.m. on Tuesday. As for Economedes, they will be playing at home against the Cougars at 7:30 p.m. on Tuesday. Edinburg North will be looking to extend their current eight-game winning streak.
