After a string of nine wins, the Bertie Falcons's good fortune finally ran out on Saturday. They fell just short of Garner by a score of 52-49. The result shouldn't come as a shock considering that's the fewest points Bertie has scored all season.
Bertie's loss came despite strong showings from Zymiere Dempsey and Tequan Holley. Dempsey scored 14 points along with seven rebounds and four steals, while Holley scored 14 points along with three steals. The contest was Dempsey's fifth in a row with at least ten points. Jayza Lee was another key contributor, scoring three points along with five rebounds.
Bertie's defeat ended a four-game streak of wins at home and dropped them to 9-1. As for Garner, their win was their 12th straight on the road dating back to last season, which pushed their record up to 6-5.
Both teams are looking forward to the support of their home crowds in their upcoming games. Bertie will take on Martin County at 8:00 p.m. on Tuesday. One thing working in Martin County's favor is that they have posted big point totals in their last seven games. As for Garner, they will be playing at home against Fuquay - Varina at 7:00 p.m. on Thursday. Fuquay - Varina will have to bring their A-game into this one, as they are staring down a pretty big deficit in the MaxPreps North Carolina Rankings (they are ranked 430th, while Garner is ranked 80th).
