The Hillsboro Hiltoppers were the 38-33 winner over the Deer Creek-Mackinaw Chiefs when they last played one another back in December of 2019, but their luck changed this time around. Hillsboro fell 48-38 to Deer Creek-Mackinaw on Friday. While losing is never fun, Hillsboro can't take it too hard given the team's big disadvantage in MaxPreps' Illinois basketball rankings (they are ranked 233rd, while Deer Creek-Mackinaw is ranked 21st).
Hillsboro's loss came despite strong showings from Ella Greenwood and Amya Greenwood. Greenwood scored ten points along with four steals, while Greenwood scored ten points along with six rebounds and four steals. The matchup was Greenwood's fourth in a row with at least ten points. The team also got some help courtesy of Kearstynn Davis, who scored eight points.
Hillsboro's defeat dropped their record down to 8-7. As for Deer Creek-Mackinaw, the win (which was their 12th in a row) raised their record to 13-1.
Hillsboro will finish 2023 at home by hosting Tri-City at 9:00 a.m. on Wednesday. Deer Creek-Mackinaw's road trip will continue as they head out to face PORTA/Ashland-Chandlerville Central at 7:30 p.m. on December 27th. PORTA/Ashland-Chandlerville Central is currently enjoying a perfect season and no doubt want to keep things rolling.
