Basketball Recap: Madison County Comes Up Short

Madison County lost against Orange County on December 3rd and unfortunately they wound up with the same result on Wednesday. The Madison County Mountaineers lost 71-46 to the Orange County Fighting Hornets. While losing is never fun, the Mountaineers can't take it too hard given the team's big disadvantage in MaxPreps' Virginia basketball rankings (they are ranked 232nd, while the Fighting Hornets are ranked 108th).

Despite the defeat, Madison County saw an underclassman step up: freshman Gracie Woodward posted seven points in addition to 14 boards and six steals. Those six steals set a new season-high mark for Woodward. The team also got some help courtesy of Michelle Thompson, who put up eight points and six assists.

Even though they lost, Madison County smashed the offensive glass and finished the game with 19 offensive boards. That strong performance was nothing new for the team: they've now pulled down at least 13 offensive rebounds in four consecutive games.

Chloe Hebert continued her habit of posting crazy stat lines for Orange County, dropping a double-double on 14 points and 12 rebounds. Hebert has been hot recently, having posted nine or more boards the last three times she's played. Another player making a difference was Emma Mastin, who went 5 of 9 on her way to 13 points.

Madison County's loss was their fourth straight on the road, which dropped their record down to 2-6. As for Orange County, their win bumped their record up to 5-2.

Both teams are looking forward to the support of their home crowds in their upcoming games. Madison County will host Page County at 7:30 p.m. on Friday. Madison County has been getting the ball to fall more lately as they've increased their point totals each of their last three games. As for Orange County, they will look to defend their home court on Friday against Charlottesville at 6:00 p.m. Orange County is strutting in with some offensive muscle as they've averaged 62 points per game this season.
