The Heide Trask Titans waltzed into their match on Friday with six straight wins but they left with seven. In a tight contest that could have gone either way, they made off with a 58-57 victory over West Columbus. Given Heide Trask's advantage in MaxPreps' North Carolina basketball rankings (they are ranked 145th, while West Columbus is ranked 306th), the result wasn't entirely unexpected.
Multiple players turned in solid performances to lead Heide Trask to victory, but perhaps none more so than Myron Mckoy, who scored 21 points along with six rebounds and three steals. Mckoy is absolutely dominating the steal category: he's posted at least two every time he's taken the court this season. Another player making a difference was Sherrod Henderson, who dropped a double-double on 19 points and 16 rebounds.
West Columbus' defeat came despite a true team effort from the offense, with many players turning in solid performances. Perhaps the best among them was Unique Kelly, who scored 14 points along with seven rebounds and four steals. Kelly has been hot recently, having posted two or more steals the last six times he's played. The team also got some help courtesy of Jaylen Bellamy, who scored 14 points.
West Columbus struggled to work together and finished the game with only an assist. They were crushed by their opponents in that department as Heide Trask racked up nine assists.
Heide Trask's victory was their fourth straight on the road, which pushed their record up to 12-4. As for West Columbus, their loss ended a five-game streak of wins at home dating back to last season and dropped them to 8-5.
Heide Trask will take on Whiteville at 7:30 p.m. on Tuesday. Hopefully Whiteville focused on turnovers this week since the team gave up seven last Tuesday. As for West Columbus, they will head out on the road to square off against East Bladen at 7:30 p.m. on Wednesday.
