Basketball Recap: Cabanna Wilkins' Big Game Can't Quite Lead Red Springs over Fairmont

Red Springs lost against Fairmont back in February of 2024 and unfortunately they wound up with the same result on Tuesday. The Red Springs Red Devils came up short against the Fairmont Golden Tornadoes, falling 49-25. While losing is never fun, the Red Devils can't take it too hard given the team's big disadvantage in MaxPreps' North Carolina basketball rankings (they are ranked 429th, while the Golden Tornadoes are ranked 16th).

Red Springs lost despite a true team effort on offense, the best among them being Cabanna Wilkins, who posted eight points. That's the most points Wilkins has posted since back in January of 2024. The team also got some help courtesy of Monica Washington, who had three points along with seven rebounds and three steals.

Fairmont had a senior duo take command as Taniya Simms dropped a double-double on 13 points and ten rebounds and Shaniah Smith put up 11 points in addition to five assists and three steals. Those 11 points set a new season-high mark for Smith. Another player making a difference was Aaliyah Duran, who posted 11 points.

Red Springs' defeat was their fifth straight on the road dating back to last season, which dropped their record down to 3-10. As for Fairmont, their win bumped their record up to 9-1.

Red Springs didn't take long to hit the court again: they've already played their next matchup, a 58-38 loss against St. Pauls on the 9th. As for Fairmont, they also wasted no time getting back out on the court and have already played their next game, a 2-0 victory against Latta on the 8th.
