Basketball Recap: Southern Christian Takes a Loss

If Southern Christian was riding high fresh off their 62-10 takedown of Varsity Opponent last Thursday, their most recent game may have dampened their spirits a bit. The Southern Christian Patriots were beaten by the Evangel Christian Lightning 69-37 on Saturday. While losing is never fun, the Patriots can't take it too hard given the team's big disadvantage in MaxPreps' Alabama basketball rankings (they are ranked 345th, while the Lightning are ranked 84th).

Several Patriots players turned in solid performances despite ultimately coming up short. Perhaps the best among those players was Gabriel Decker, who posted seven points and four steals. Decker is on a roll when it comes to steals, as he's now grabbed two or more in the last three games he's played. Another player making a difference was Cole Johnson, who went 6 for 15 on his way to 14 points and seven rebounds.

Evangel Christian got their win on the backs of several key players, but it was Sawyer Blackman out in front who went 8 of 11 en route to 16 points. The dominant performance gave Blackman a new career-high in points. Hudson Walker was another key player, going 6 for 9 on his way to 14 points.

Southern Christian has been struggling recently as they've lost four of their last five games, which put a noticeable dent in their 5-8 record this season. As for Evangel Christian, the victory made it two in a row for them and bumps their season record up to 15-4.

Southern Christian will venture away from home to challenge Wiregrass at 7:00 p.m. on Monday. Wiregrass knows how to get points on the board -- the team has finished with 55 points or more in their past three contests -- so hopefully Southern Christian likes a good challenge. As for Evangel Christian, they will be playing at home against Ezekiel Academy at 7:00 p.m. on Tuesday. Ezekiel Academy is strutting in with some offensive muscle as they've averaged 62.3 points per game this season.
