The Penelope Wolverines waltzed into their contest on Friday with eight straight wins but they left with nine. They enjoyed a cozy 61-46 victory over Avalon. Given Penelope's advantage in MaxPreps' Texas basketball rankings (they are ranked 700th, while the Eagles are ranked 1510th), the result wasn't entirely unexpected.
Penelope had a senior duo take command as Jayden Schwarz dropped a double-double on 22 points and 14 rebounds and Michael Corson dropped a double-double on 23 points and ten rebounds. Schwarz has been hot recently, having posted eight or more rebounds the last 18 times he's played.
Penelope's victory was their sixth straight at home, which pushed their record up to 23-2. Those good results were due in large part to their offensive dominance across that stretch, as they averaged 66.0 points per game. As for Avalon, they have traveled a rocky road recently having lost 14 of their last 18 games, which put a noticeable dent in their 7-17 record this season.
Coincidentally, Penelope and the Eagles will both be playing the Yellowjackets the next time they take the court. Penelope will head out to face the Yellowjackets at 7:15 p.m. on Tuesday, while the Eagles will head out to face them at 7:15 p.m. on Friday.
