The Newman Greenies fought the good fight in their overtime matchup against the Phoenix Spartans on Thursday but wound up with a less-than-desirable result. They fell to the Spartans 49-43. Newman was given a dose of their own medicine in this game as Phoenix apparently hadn't forgotten their loss the last time these teams played back in January of 2023.
Phoenix found their leader in underclassman Da'cora Burton, who scored 20 points along with three steals. The team also got some help courtesy of Jamiya Addison, who scored eight points along with six rebounds.
Newman has been struggling recently, as they've lost five of their last six games, which put a noticeable dent in their 7-13 record this season. As for Phoenix, they now have a winning record of 13-12.
Newman's road trip will continue as they head out to face St. Mary's Dominican at 5:30 p.m. on January 19th. The matchup should be an exciting one, as these teams are ranked near one another in Louisiana (St. Mary's Dominican is ranked 134th, while Newman is ranked 147th). Phoenix won't have much time to rest: their next game is against St. Mary's Academy at 5:00 p.m. on January 19th. St. Mary's Academy's defense has only allowed 29.3 points per game this season, so Phoenix's offense will have their work cut out for them.
