2A/1A Northwest recap Oct. 30, 2012
The biggest upset of the week belonged to West Stokes, who took down 151st ranked North Surry, 21-12.
Bishop McGuinness was the team that gained the most ground in the standings this week, jumping from eighth to sixth in 2A/1A Northwest. The Villains vanquished North Stokes 34-21 earlier in the week.
East Surry's dynamic duo of Jon Dickenson and Jeremy Gilley proved tough for Mount Airy to stop, as they were the top passer and receiver in the league this week. Dickenson threw for 138 yards and Gilley had 80 yards receiving. Austin Johnson helped East Surry's passing attack out by catching three balls for 34 yards.
Jacquan Martin was the most productive running back in the league this week. He ran for 163 yards on 24 carries as South Stokes fell to the Bears. Teammate Christian Artis added to the ground attack by rushing for 133 yards.
North Stokes' Garrett Wood and Matthew Hopkins have formed a dynamic duo this season, leading the league in both passing and receiving yards. Wood has thrown for 2206 yards this season, while Hopkins, a 6-foot-0 receiver, has 55 catches for 785 yards. Martin from the Sauras leads the league in rushing with 2010 yards.
A big matchup in 2A/1A Northwest this week will be when South Stokes takes on East Surry. As it stands, Jonathan Frasher's team is in second, while David Diamont's team is in fifth.
Mount Airy extended the longest winning streak in the league this week by beating the Cardinals, 51-7. The victory was the 10th in a row for Kelly Holder's team.
