The Hattiesburg Tigers will venture away from home to square off against the Sumrall Bobcats at 6:30 p.m. on Friday. Hattiesburg is strutting in with some hitting muscle as they've averaged 9 runs per game this season.
Last Monday, Hattiesburg came up short against West Jones and fell 8-5. The loss continues a trend for the Tigers in their meetings with the Mustangs: they've now lost four in a row.
Camiyah Craft put in work while hitting and pitching. She looked comfortable on the mound, pitching 3.2 innings while giving up no earned runs off two hits. Craft was also solid in the batter's box, scoring a run and stealing two bases while going 1-for-3. She is on a roll when it comes to stolen bases, as she's now snagged at least one in each of the last four games she's played.
In other batting news, Darriyah Walls was cooking despite her team's loss, scoring two runs and stealing six bases while going 1-for-4. She has been hot recently, having posted at least one stolen base the last four times she's played. Arihanna Faulkner also deserves some recognition as she snagged her first stolen bases of the season.
Meanwhile, Sumrall came tearing into Thursday's match with three straight wins (a stretch where they outscored their opponents by an average of 12.3 runs), and they left with even more momentum. Everything went their way against the Wildcats as they made off with a 7-1 win. Considering the Bobcats have won 13 games by more than five runs this season, Thursday's blowout was nothing new.
Avery Smith spent all seven innings on the mound, and it's clear why: she surrendered a run (which was unearned) on five hits and racked up ten Ks. Those ten strikeouts set a new season-high mark for her.
On the hitting side, the team relied heavily on Kara Applewhite, who went 2-for-4 with one triple, two RBI, and one run. The team also got some help courtesy of Laura Smith, who went 2-for-3 with two RBI and one double.
Sumrall's victory was their fourth straight on the road, which pushed their record up to 19-5. The road wins came thanks in part to their hitting performance across that stretch, as they averaged 10.0 runs over those games. As for Hattiesburg, their defeat dropped their record down to 9-7.
Friday's contest will be a test for both teams' pitchers. Hattiesburg hasn't had any issues making contact this season, having earned a batting average of .321. However, it's not like Sumrall struggles in that department as they've averaged .312. With both teams so capable at the plate, fans should be ready for an impressive hitting performance.
Hattiesburg might still be hurting after the 19-0 loss they got from Sumrall in their previous matchup back in March of 2022. Can the Tigers avenge their defeat or is history doomed to repeat itself? We'll find out soon enough.
