Seventy-First extended their losing streak to three on Wednesday, dropping them down to 4-7. They came up short against the St. Pauls Bulldogs, falling 12-2. Unfortunately, that's the second time they've come up short against the Bulldogs this season, as they also lost their prior matchup 7-3 on Tuesday.
Seventy-First saw four different players step up and record at least one hit. One of them was Ski Loremstorie, who went 1-for-2 with one run and one double.
As for St. Pauls, the victory (which was their fifth in a row) raised their record to 7-5. The wins came thanks in part to their pitching effort, having only surrendered 1.8 runs on average over those games.
On St. Pauls' side, Cailen Mcneill made a big impact no matter where he played. He looked comfortable on the mound, tossing four innings while giving up just one earned (and one unearned) run off three hits. Mcneill is becoming a predictor of St. Pauls' success: when he allows at most two earned runs the team is undefeated (and 4-5 when he doesn't). Mcneill was also big at the plate, going 2-for-3 with three RBI, two runs, and one triple. He is also on a roll when it comes to stolen bases, as he's now snagged at least one in each of the last three games he's played.
In other batting news, the team relied heavily on Josh Brooks, who went a perfect 2-for-2 with three runs, two doubles, and one RBI. Those two doubles gave him a new career-high. Austin Lavoie was another key player, going a perfect 1-for-1 with two stolen bases, one run, and one RBI.
Looking ahead, Seventy-First will be taking part in a tournament against Westover at 3:30 p.m. on Saturday. The Wolverines have struggled to contain batters this season (they've allowed 8.6 runs per game on average), something the Falcons will no doubt try to take advantage of. As for St. Pauls, they will venture away from home to take on Red Springs at 4:00 p.m. on Saturday. The Bulldogs' pitchers better be ready for this one: the Red Devils have averaged an impressive 6.2 runs per game this season.
