Even though the Cristo Rey Royals scored an imposing 70 points on Monday, the Steward Spartans still came out on top. Steward walked away with a 77-70 win over Cristo Rey. Given Steward's advantage in MaxPreps' Virginia basketball rankings (they are ranked 44th, while Cristo Rey is ranked 153rd), the result wasn't entirely unexpected.
Owen Gray was his usual excellent self, dropping a double-double on 30 points and 14 rebounds. As a matter of fact, that's the most points he has scored all season. Another player making a difference was Fisher Sprouse, who dropped a double-double on 13 points and 11 rebounds.
Steward's win bumped their record up to 9-5. As for Cristo Rey, their loss dropped their record down to 10-12.
Both teams will have to hit the road in their upcoming games. Steward won't have much time to rest: their next contest is against Hampton Roads Academy at 7:00 p.m. on January 23rd. As for Cristo Rey, they will head out on the road to challenge Veritas Collegiate Academy at 5:00 p.m. on Saturday. Veritas Collegiate Academy knows how to get points on the board -- the squad has finished with flashy point totals in its past 13 matches -- so hopefully Cristo Rey likes a good challenge.
