The Jefferson Mustangs's recent rough patch got a bit rougher on Friday after their 19th straight loss. They were outmatched by Brackenridge on the road and fell 60-24. While losing is never fun, Jefferson can't take it too hard given the team's big disadvantage in MaxPreps' Texas basketball rankings (they are ranked 1332nd, while Brackenridge is ranked 543rd).
Jefferson's loss came despite strong showings from Destiny Duenas and Marina Guajardo. Duenas scored ten points along with five rebounds and two steals, while Guajardo scored six points along with five rebounds.
Perhaps unsurprisingly given the score, Jefferson struggled to work together and finished the game with only four assists. They were crushed by their opponents in that department as Brackenridge racked up 16 assists.
Brackenridge's success was the result of a balanced attack that saw several players step up, but Sarah Arriaga led the charge by dropping a double-double on 21 points and 15 rebounds. Arriaga is trending in the right direction, as she's improved her point production for three games straight. The team also got some help courtesy of Alasia Brown, who dropped a double-double on 17 points and 14 rebounds.
Jefferson has traveled a rocky road recently having lost 22 of their last 23 games, which put a noticeable dent in their 3-28 record this season. As for Brackenridge, their win was their seventh straight at home, which pushed their record up to 19-14.
Jefferson will take on Sam Houston at 5:00 p.m. on Tuesday. Hopefully Jefferson focused on turnovers this week since the team gave up 19 on Friday. As for Brackenridge, they will head out on the road to square off against Lanier at 5:30 p.m. on Tuesday. Brackenridge is facing Lanier at the right time seeing as Lanier is stuck on a four-game losing streak.
