Basketball Game Preview: Freeman Flyers vs. Viborg/Hurley Cougars

Freeman is 2-8 against Viborg/Hurley since December of 2016 but they'll have a chance to close the gap a little bit on Thursday. The Freeman Flyers will challenge the Viborg/Hurley Cougars at 7:45 p.m. One thing working in Freeman's favor is that they have posted at least 55 points in their last 18 contests.

Freeman is on a roll after a high-stakes playoff matchup on Tuesday. They came out on top against Howard by a score of 72-60. The game was the first time the Flyers have beaten the Tigers on their court since December 20, 2016.

Freeman found their leader in freshman David Walter, who went 9-for-13 on his way to 23 points and eight rebounds. Walter's evening made it 13 games in a row in which he has scored at least 17 points. Another player making a difference was Luke Miller, who shot 67% from the field to rack up 15 points.

Meanwhile, Viborg/Hurley waltzed into their matchup on Tuesday with four straight wins... but they left with five. They blew past the Chiefs 73-37. Given the Cougars' advantage in MaxPreps' South Dakota basketball rankings (they are ranked 11th, while the Chiefs are ranked 84th), the result wasn't entirely unexpected.

Freeman has been performing incredibly well recently as they've won 11 of their last 12 games. That's provided a nice bump to their 19-4 record this season. The wins came thanks in part to their offensive performance across that stretch, as they averaged 68.5 points over those games. Viborg/Hurley's win bumped their record up to 23-2.

Freeman didn't have too much breathing room in their contest against Viborg/Hurley in their previous meeting back in December of 2024, but they still walked away with a 57-53 victory. The rematch might be a little tougher for Freeman since the team won't have the home-court advantage this time around. We'll see if the change in venue makes a difference.
