Softball Recap: Freedom's Losing Streak Is a Thing of the Past

Freedom had to endure a 17-game losing streak dating back to last season, but that streak is no more. Everything went their way against the Wekiva Mustangs on Wednesday as the Freedom Patriots made off with a 17-7 win. The Patriots' hitters stepped up their game for this one, as that was the most runs they've scored all season.

Allison Smith made a splash while hitting and pitching. She struck out 14 batters over 5.2 innings while giving up five earned (and two unearned) runs off eight hits. She has been nothing but reliable on the mound: she hasn't tossed less than five strikeouts in five consecutive appearances. She was also stellar in the batter's box, going a perfect 4-for-4 with five runs, four RBI, and one triple. Those four hits gave her a new career-high.

In other batting news, Freedom got a massive performance out of Kaylin Braasch, who scored three runs and stole Two bases. while going 3-for-5. The dominant performance gave Braasch a new career-high in runs. Another player making a difference was Gemma Bartlinski, who scored two runs and stole Two bases. while going 3-for-5.

Freedom always had someone on base and finished the game having posted an OBP of .558. They easily outclassed their opponents in that department as Wekiva only posted an OBP of .406.

Freedom's first victory this season bumped their record up to 1-10. As for Wekiva, they are on a five-game losing streak that has dropped them down to 1-6.

Freedom will have some time to savor their win since their next game is a little ways off: they'll take on Dr. Phillips at 6:00 p.m. on March 26th. Wekiva will also get a bit of a break before their next game: they'll face off against Lake Buena Vista at 6:00 p.m. on March 26th.
