Great Mills is 8-2 against Northern since February of 2018 and they'll have a chance to extend that success on Thursday. The Great Mills Hornets will challenge the Northern Patriots at 6:00 p.m. Both come into the matchup bolstered by wins in their previous matches.
Last Monday, Great Mills escaped with a win against Thomas Stone by the margin of a single free throw, 34-33. The win made it back-to-back victories for the Hornets.
ABRIL ESPARZA was her usual excellent self, putting up eight points in addition to nine boards and four steals.
Meanwhile, winning is always nice, but doing so behind a season-high score is even better (just ask Northern). They really took it to Lackey for the full four quarters, racking up a 59-9 win. Given the Patriots' advantage in MaxPreps' Maryland basketball rankings (they are ranked 116th, while the Chargers are ranked 238th), the result on Tuesday wasn't entirely unexpected.
Northern's win came from a few key players Great Mills will need to keep an eye on. One of the most notable was Mikayla Jones, who went 6 of 11 on her way to 16 points and five steals. The team also got some help courtesy of Avaya Fields, who almost dropped a double-double on 12 points and nine boards.
Northern was working as a unit and finished the game with 16 assists. That's the most assists they've posted since the start of last season.
Northern now has a winning record of 6-5. As for Great Mills, their record is now 5-3.
Rebounding is likely to be a big factor in this contest: Great Mills has been smashing the glass this season, having averaged 33.5 boards per game. However, it's not like Northern struggles in that department as they've been averaging 37.3 rebounds. With both teams battling to corral missed shots, we'll see if one team can grab an edge.
Great Mills was able to grind out a solid victory over Northern in their previous meeting back in January of 2024, winning 56-43. The rematch might be a little tougher for Great Mills since the team won't have the home-court advantage this time around. We'll see if the change in venue makes a difference.
