The Newman Greenies are ranked highly in their home state, and on Saturday they took on another highly ranked team in the form of the DeMatha Stags. Newman fell 66-58 to DeMatha. Having run the score up that high, both teams probably have some extra defensive drills coming up.
Despite the loss, Newman still got an impressive performance from Christopher Cenac, who dropped a double-double on 27 points and 21 rebounds. Cenac hasn't dropped below two steals for five straight games. The team also got some help courtesy of Sebastian Thrower, who scored 5 points.
DeMatha found their leader in underclassman Ashton (ace) Meeks, who scored 21 points. The matchup was Meeks' third in a row with at least ten points. Another player making a difference was Jacob Wallace, who scored 4 points along with 8 rebounds and 7 assists.
Newman's defeat dropped their record down to 4-3. As for DeMatha, the win (which was their third in a row) raised their record to 3-0.
Both teams will have to hit the road in their upcoming games. Newman will square off against Madison Prep Academy at 7:00 p.m. on Thursday. The matchup should be an exciting one, as these teams are ranked near one another in Louisiana (Madison Prep Academy is ranked sixth, while Newman is ranked 17th). DeMatha is on the road again on Wednesday and play against Eleanor Roosevelt at 7:00 p.m. on December 6th.
