Sandusky Bay recap Sept. 26, 2012
Perkins extended the longest winning streak in Sandusky Bay this week by beating Edison, 37-7. The victory was the fourth in a row for the Pirates.
Clyde was the team that gained the most ground in the standings this week, jumping from eighth to fifth in the league. Earlier in the week, the Fliers defeated Margaretta 56-14.
Perkins' offense was tough to stop this week, as it produced the league's top passer, rusher and receiver. Brandon Smith threw for 77 and one touchdown and Aaron Mawhirter had 44 yards receiving. On the ground Mitch Benkey chipped in 154 yards. Tony Didion helped Perkins' passing attack out by catching one ball for 13 yards.
Perkins' offense has been unstoppable this season and the Pirates feature the season leaders in passing, rushing and receiving yards. Smith has thrown for 513 yards and five touchdowns this season, while Dale Irby has 11 catches for 152 yards. Benkey leads the league in rushing with 513 yards.
A big matchup in Sandusky Bay this week will be when Huron takes on Jason Ziegler's team. The Tigers are currently in third, while the Pirates are in first.
The top two defenses in the league will face off this season when Huron takes on Perkins. Tony Legando's team has allowed 77 points this season, while the Pirates have given up 68.
Perkins moved up to 159 from 251 in the state rankings this week, the biggest jump in the league. The Pirates climbed the ranks as a result of a 37-7 win over the Chargers.
