Special teams also deserves some recognition, posting 19 points in total. The biggest highlight from special teams (and perhaps the team as a whole) came courtesy of Warren, who ran a kickoff back for a touchdown. Another bright spot was a punt return touchdown from him.
Another reason for the win was Iowa Colony's imposing defense, which managed to get into the backfield for six sacks. Corey Anthony Jr. was especially locked on to Pflugerville's QB and sacked him twice. Iowa Colony got some further help from Kah'Ni Watts: he picked up a sack, made eight total tackles (2.0 for loss), and defended one pass in addition to snagging two interceptions.
Meanwhile, Brenham gave up the first points on Friday, but they didn't give up any more after. They came out on top in a nail-biter against Liberty Hill, sneaking past 27-24. For those keeping track at home, that's the closest win the Cubs have posted since September 19th.
Iowa Colony better keep an eye on Cartelle Brown. He was instrumental in Brenham's win, picking up 104 receiving yards and a pair of touchdowns, while also rushing for 48 yards.
Brenham didn't go easy on the quarterback and picked off two passes before the game was over. The picks came courtesy of Trelyn Kelly and Ledrick Walker Jr. Walker Jr also set a new season-high mark in total tackles with 19. Another thorn in Liberty Hill's side was Kristian Prosper, who made 17 total tackles (2.0 for loss).
Iowa Colony's record is now 11-1. As for Brenham, their record now sits at an identical 11-1.
Friday's game might be decided on the ground. Iowa Colony has been excellent on the ground this season, having averaged 190.6 rushing yards per game. However, it's not like Brenham struggles in that department as they've been averaging 164.8 rushing yards. There's a good chance Friday's matchup turns into a tough fight on the ground.
