The town of Tyler is known for one of the greatest comebacks in Texas High School football history. Add another one to the list.
Lufkin (Texas) overcame a 39-point deficit and defeated
Lee (Tyler, Texas) 52-49 in overtime on a
Rodrigo Molina 27-yard field goal. Lufkin trailed 42-3 before making its comeback.
The comeback rivals the famous 1994 matchup between John Tyler and Plano East when Plano East overcame a 41-7 deficit in the final 3 minutes, 3 seconds to take a 44-41 lead. However Tyler ran back a kickoff with 24 seconds remaining to win 48-44.
Lufkin tied the game at 49-49 on a tipped pass for a 36-yard touchdown from
Kordell Rodgers to
Dhailon Phillips with 2:24 remaining. Ellis Jackson added the two-point conversion to tie the score.
Lee built a huge lead in the first half thanks to an explosive offense that tallied 526 yards in two quarters, according to Clint Buckley of the East Texas Sports Network.
Rogers rallied Lufkin with a pair of touchdown runs and two touchdown passes in the second half.
