It was a good run, but the Archbishop Spalding Cavaliers unfortunately witnessed the end of their four-game winning streak on Wednesday. They received a tough blow as they fell 59-45 to St. Mary's. Archbishop Spalding found out winning isn't easy when you don't work as a unit and rack up seven fewer assists than your opponent.
Archbishop Spalding's defeat came despite a true team effort from the offense, with many players turning in solid performances. Perhaps the best among them was Madison Smith, who scored 15 points. That's the first time this season that Smith scored 15 or more points. Eden Berry was another key contributor, scoring ten points along with five rebounds.
Leading St. Mary's to victory were Bailey Harris and Alexandra Vandiver. Harris scored 18 points, while Vandiver shot 7-for-10 from downtown and dropped a double-double on 26 points and ten rebounds. The match was Vandiver's eighth in a row with at least ten points. Another player making a difference was Anna Ervin, who scored two points.
Archbishop Spalding's loss dropped their record down to 4-4. As for St. Mary's, the victory makes it two in a row for them and bumps their season record up to 7-5.
Archbishop Spalding and Eastern will round out the year against one another at 2:30 p.m. on Thursday at. St. Mary's won't have much time to rest: their next match is against Severn School at 5:30 p.m. on December 21st. Severn School will have to bring their A-game into this one, as they are staring down a pretty big deficit in the MaxPreps Maryland Rankings (they are ranked 129th, while St. Mary's is ranked 37th).
