Mission Valley recap Oct. 3, 2012
South El Monte's Mario Burciaga rumbled for the longest rushing play in Mission Valley this season in his game against San Marino last week. Burciaga ran for 67 yards on the play and finished with 113 on the day as his team lost to the Titans.
El Monte was the team that gained the most ground in the standings this week, jumping from fifth to third in the league. The Lions defeated Bell Gardens 46-41 earlier in the week.
El Monte's dynamic duo of Brandon Martinez and Adolfo Sanchez proved tough for the Lancers to stop, as they were the top passer and receiver in the league this week. Martinez threw for 573 yards and five touchdowns and Sanchez had 224 yards receiving. Josh Morales helped El Monte's passing attack out by catching seven balls for 120 yards.
El Monte's offense has been unstoppable this season and the Lions feature the season leaders in passing, rushing and receiving yards. Martinez has thrown for 1879 yards and 16 touchdowns this season, while Sanchez has 27 catches for 600 yards. Bryan Luevano leads the league in rushing with 540 yards.
The top two teams in Mission Valley will face off this week when first place Gabrielino takes on second place Mountain View. Last week, Gabrielino, while Mountain View lost to Lynwood.
Entering into this week's contest against Arroyo, Martinez is short just 121 passing yards to break 2,000 on the season.
The Knights moved up to 504 from 614 in the state rankings this week, the biggest jump in the league. Arroyo was able to make the jump by beating La Canada 42-7.
