With March Madness in full swing, the usual upsets and surprises have begun to unfold. The
Victoria (10-11) boys basketball team pulled off one of the state's bigger surprises Tuesday by rallying from an 11-point deficit to begin the fourth quarter and eventually winning 47-46 over Class 1A, Division 1 10th-ranked Quinter.
Senior
Kameron Dinkel, who had a game-high 16 points in the win, dished to fellow senior
Jordan Bleske for a game winning layup with six seconds left to finish off the rally. Dinkel hit a 3-pointer to pull the Knights within 44-41 with 4:55 remaining in the game. Then Victoria took a 45-44 advantage following an offensive rebound and put back by
Kyle Schmidt.
Brian Ochs put Quinter on top 46-45 after making a couple of free throws with 47 seconds remaining, setting up the game's final seconds.
"The credit goes to the seniors," Victoria coach Stuart Moeckel told the Hays Daily News. "They really just stepped up and took care of business when they needed to. I was really, really proud of their effort tonight."
Victoria will continue its unexpected run Friday at 7:30 p.m. against seventh-ranked
Stockton in the semifinals of the Class 1A, Division 1 sub-state tournament at Sylvan.
The madness continues this week and through the weekend before culminating at the Kansas boys and girls state basketball tournaments being held at seven locations throughout the state March 9-12. Class 6A moves from Emporia State University's White Auditorium to Koch Arena located on the campus at Wichita State University.
Class 5A competition will take place at the Topeka-Kansas Expocentre, while Class 4A schools will take the hard courts at the Salina Bicentennial Center. The HCC-Hutchinson Sports Arena will be the location to catch all of your Class 3A boys and girls action.
Class 2A action is set to unfold on the basketball court at Kansas State University's Bramlage Coliseum in Manhattan. Class 1A-Division 1 schools will replace Class 6A at White Auditorium in Emporia, while Class 1A-Division 2 competition will take place at Fort Hays State University's Gross Memorial Coliseum in Hays.
Below is a look at which teams should battle through the sub-state tournament brackets and into the state tournaments. Next week we'll pick the state tournament brackets.
