The Mallard Creek Mavericks pushed their score all the way to 59 on Tuesday, but even that wasn't enough to win. They fell just short of Hopewell by a score of 61-59. The loss unfortunately continues a disappointing trend for Mallard Creek in their matchups with the Titans: they've now lost five in a row.
Despite the loss, Mallard Creek still got an impressive performance from Langston Boyd, who scored 18 points along with five rebounds and two steals. Boyd has been hot recently, having posted 17 or more points the last four times he's played. The team also got some help courtesy of Rassell Young, who scored 15 points.
Quay Watson was his usual excellent self, scoring 23 points along with eight assists and six steals for Hopewell. That makes it three consecutive games in which Watson has scored at least a third of Hopewell's points. Another player making a difference was Julian Mack, who scored 13 points.
Mallard Creek's defeat dropped their record down to 6-12. As for Hopewell, they have been performing well recently as they've won three of their last four contests, which somehow isn't as good as their 14-4 record this season.
Both teams will have to hit the road in their upcoming games. Mallard Creek won't have much time to rest: their next game is against the Hawks at 7:15 p.m. on January 31st. West Mecklenburg will have to bring their A-game into this one, as they are staring down a pretty big deficit in the MaxPreps North Carolina Rankings (they are ranked 386th, while the Mavericks are ranked 178th). As for Hopewell, they will head out on the road to challenge the Lions at 7:15 p.m. on Friday. Hopefully West Charlotte focused on turnovers this week since the team gave up 12 on Tuesday.
