Macomb and Illini West are an even 5-5 against one another since May of 2017, but likely not for long. The Bombers will head out to face off against the Chargers at 6:00 p.m. on Wednesday. Expect the scorekeeper to be kept busy: if their previous games are any indication, these teams will really light up the scoreboard.
On Monday, Macomb got the win against Hamilton/Warsaw by a conclusive 14-4. The Bombers haven't had any issues with the Titans recently, as the game was their sixth consecutive win against them.
The team relied heavily on Drew Watson, who went 2-for-3 with two runs, two RBI, and one double. Leighton Lambert was another key player, going a perfect 2-for-2 with two RBI.
Macomb always had someone on base and finished the game having posted an OBP of .633. That's the best OBP they've posted all season.
Meanwhile, Illini West came tearing into Saturday's match with three straight wins (a stretch where they outscored their opponents by an average of 4 runs), and they left with even more momentum. They blew past the Pirates 13-2. The Chargers might be getting used to big wins seeing as the team has won 15 games by six runs or more this season.
Ethan Carlisle made a splash no matter where he played. He didn't allow a single earned run and allowed only one hit while striking out eight over four innings pitched. That's the most strikeouts he has posted since back in May of 2024. He was also solid in the batter's box, going 2-for-3 with one run and one RBI.
In other batting news, Grady Blue was a standout: he went 2-for-3 with one stolen base, two RBI, and one run. Another player making a difference was Wesley Robertson, who got on base in three of his four plate appearances with two runs and one RBI.
Illini West pushed their record up to 25-10 with the victory, which was their third straight at home. Those home wins came thanks in part to their hitting performance across that stretch, as they averaged 11.0 runs over those games. As for Macomb, their record is now 18-14.
Macomb came out on top in a nail-biter against Illini West in their previous meeting last Saturday, sneaking past 6-4. Will the Bombers repeat their success, or do the Chargers have a new game plan this time around? We'll find out soon enough.
