The Pontotoc Warriors will head out to face off against the East Union Urchins at 5:30 p.m. on Friday. Pontotoc is strutting in with some hitting muscle as they've averaged 8.5 runs per game this season.
Pontotoc came into their game on Tuesday off a hard-fought close win, but unfortunately suffered a serious change of fortune. They came up short against Tupelo, falling 11-1. The match marked the Warriors' lowest-scoring game so far this season.
Pontotoc saw four different players step up and record at least one hit. One of them was Malachi Witcher, who scored a run while going 2-for-3.
Meanwhile, East Union waltzed into their contest on Tuesday with two straight wins... but they left with three. They were the clear victor by a 13-3 margin over the Warriors. Considering the Urchins have won four games by more than nine runs this season, Tuesday's blowout was nothing new.
Landon Harmon and Hunter Huffstatler were a major factor while hitting and pitching. Throwing, Harmon struck out eight batters over four innings while giving up three earned runs off four hits (and only one walk). Meanwhile, Huffstatler pitched two innings while giving up no earned runs off one hit. Harmon has been nothing but reliable on the mound: he hasn't given up more than two walks in three consecutive appearances. At the plate, Harmon went 2-for-3 with one home run, three runs, and three RBI, while Huffstatler scored two runs while going 2-for-4. That's the most RBI Harmon has posted since back in April of 2024.
In other batting news, the team relied heavily on Daniel Whitfield, who scored three runs and stole a base while getting on base in four of his five plate appearances. The dominant performance gave him a new career-high in runs. Another player making a difference was Ethan Lamontagne, who scored a run while getting on base in three of his four plate appearances.
East Union always had someone on base and finished the game having posted an OBP of .541. That's the best OBP they've posted all season.
East Union pushed their record up to 4-1 with the win, which was their 11th straight at home dating back to last season. The wins came thanks in part to their pitching effort, having only surrendered 1.2 runs over those games. As for Pontotoc, their loss was their first of the season and makes their record 5-1.
The pitchers for both teams better look sharp on Friday as neither team is afraid to steal. Pontotoc has been swiping bases left and right this season, having averaged 2.8 stolen bases per game. However, it's not like East Union struggles in that department as they've been averaging 2.8 stolen bases. The only question left is which team can snag more.
Pontotoc came up short against East Union when the teams last played back in February of 2024, falling 15-11. Can Pontotoc avenge their defeat or is history doomed to repeat itself? We'll find out soon enough.
