After three lead changes,
St. Patrick (Portland, Mich.) took the lead for good when
Collin Lay thew a touchdown to
Kyle Schrauben with under a minute left in the fourth quarter and held on to upset
St. Philip Catholic Central (Battle Creek, Mich.) 50-43 on Saturday.
After trailing 37-35 at the half, the Fighting Tigers went ahead on a touchdown pass by Lay to
John Pline with less than a minute remaining in the third.
Lay dashed for two rushing touchdowns during St. Patrick's triumph.
Lay was the top performer for SP. The senior quarterback threw three touchdowns and kicked one extra point. He has now scored 14 touchdowns on the season.
The defeat comes as a step back for St. Philip Catholic Central, which notched a 67-0 victory over Tekonsha in its previous outing.
St. Patrick (6-0) will play a Southern Michigan (8 Man) game against Tekonsha next week, while St. Philip Catholic Central (4-2) will take on Waldron also in a Southern Michigan (8 Man) game.
