The Game of the Century turned into a blowout.
The highly-anticipated playoff matchup between No. 1 Lakes and No. 2 Skyline became a laugher for Skyline as the Spartans (11-0) eliminated the Lancers (10-1) from the first round of the Class 3A state tournament, 39-20.
"That's about as solid an effort as we've had this year," Skyline coach Steve Gervais told the Seattle Times.
Lakes' Kavario Middleton, widely regarded as the top prospect in the state, was held in check, while Skyline sacked QB Calvin Schmidtke six times in the first half.
"I think it had an impact," Gervais told the Times. "If you watch their tape, they haven't got to him all year."
Skyline's sophomore quarterback Jake Heaps threw for 322 yards and three touchdowns. He also rushed for another score.
Skyline will host Kennewick in the quarterfinals.
Football: Bothell, Oak Harbor Earn Rematch
In the Class 4A state playoffs, the quarterfinals will look a lot like last year's finals.
Top-ranked Bothell (11-0) will face defending champs Oak Harbor (11-0) in a rematch of last year's state title game.
Bothell advanced after beating No. 8 Central Kitsap 31-17. No. 4 Oak Harbor eliminated Olympia 30-21. Oak Harbor beat Bothell 21-14 last year.
"I'm looking forward to getting revenge," Bothell DB Cory Burk told the Seattle Times.
Last year in the quarterfinals, Bothell advanced by beating Pasco in a national-record-tying nine overtimes.
Football: ATM Forced to Forfeit Season
Archbishop Murphy of Everett was forced to forfeit its entire season. ATM was ranked No. 3 in the state at 10-0 and was set to play in the Class 2A state tournament Saturday.
ATM was forced to forfeit because a player's physical expired on Sept. 8. Physicals are only valid for one year.
ATM beat Bellingham in a state-qualifier and was to play Mark Morris of Longview. Mark Morris will now play Bellingham on Tuesday.
It's been a difficult season at ATM. Hall of Fame coach Terry Ennis, who founded the program and who has the stadium named after him, died of cancer at the beginning of the season.
Volleyball: Mead Makes it 5 in a Row
The Mead Panthers of Spokane are doing things no other volleyball team in the state has done.
The Panthers won their fifth straight Class 4A state volleyball title, beating Spokane rival Lewis and Clark 3-1 in the final in Kennewick. No school in any classification has won more than four in a row.
It was the second straight year Mead beat ninth-ranked LC (25-8) for the state title.
"I am in awe of what they did," Mead coach Judy Kight told the Seattle Times.
Mead (35-1) had a scare in the semifinals, dropping the first two games to Rogers-Puyallup.
The semifinals were where top-ranked Mead's biggest test was derailed. No. 2 Kentwood (35-1) lost its first match of the season, 3-2 to LC. Kentwood, 67-2 over the past two years, beat Rogers for third place.
In the Class 3A title match, Hanford (28-5) won its first state title by knocking off top-ranked Auburn Riverside (34-4), 3-0. Hanford was the surprise of the field; the Falcons didn't even win a league title.
Selah won its third straight Class 2A title, 3-0 over Tumwater. Colfax won the Class 1A state title, beating Connell 3-0. LaConner beat Mason 3-1 for the Class 2B title. Garfield-Palouse beat league rival Tekoa-Oakesdale 3-0 for the Class 1B title, the seventh time this season Gar-Pal beat TO.
Swimming: Class 4A Title All Tied Up
For the first time in 38 years of state meets, a girls state swim meet ended in a tie.
Garfield and Inglemoor both scored 216 points to claim the Class 4A state title at the King County Aquatic Center. Inglemoor's Megan Caylor edged Garfield's Alexandra Ernst in the 400 free relay, the final event of the day, to force the tie.
Two boys teams, Lincoln and Stadium of Tacoma, shared the title in 1953. It was Inglemoor's fourth straight and Garfield's first.
Brianne Lindblad won her fourth straight backstroke title and a hand in four victories to help Kennedy to their first state swim title in the Class 3A meet.
Lindblad also won the 100 free and anchored the 400 free relay to a title. She was also part of the medley relay team which won for the first straight year in a row.
Sehome won the Class 2A title.
Soccer: State Titles Decided This Weekend
The state soccer tournament will wrap up this weekend with semifinals on Friday and title games on Saturday.
Eastlake of Sammamish is looking to wrap up an undefeated season. The Wolves are 17-0 after beating Bellarmine Prep in the Class 4A quarterfinals.
They'll play Richland on Friday.
In the Class 3A tournament, Kate Deines scored with 30 seconds reaming as Issaquah, the defending champs, beat Kennedy 2-1 to reach the semifinals for the fourth straight year.
The 4A, 3A and 2A classifications will play in Lakewood. The small schools will play in Sumner.
