Basketball Game Preview: Cristo Rey vs. San Diego Academy Cavaliers

Cristo Rey will take on the San Diego Academy Cavaliers at 5:00 p.m. on Thursday. The two teams are strolling into their matches after big wins in their previous games.

Cristo Rey is headed in fresh off scoring the most points they have all season. They breezed by Bostonia Global to the tune of 76-8 on Tuesday. The team's explosion on offense also rewarded Cristo Rey with their most commanding win of the season.

Xavier Sawaya had an outrageously good game as he almost dropped a double-double on 22 points and nine steals. He has been hot, having posted two or more steals the last seven times he's played. Charles Sawaya was another key player, going 6 for 9 on his way to 13 points and six steals.

Meanwhile, there's no place like home for San Diego Academy, who bounced back after a loss on the road two weeks ago. They blew past Bostonia Global, posting a 63-12 victory. The high-flying offensive performance was a huge turnaround for the Cavaliers considering their 18-point performance the contest before.

San Diego Academy found their leader in sophomore Rudy Nieto, who dropped a double-double on 18 points and ten rebounds. Nieto also grabbed five steals, which is notable because San Diego Academy is 9-2 when he posts at least five steals, but 1-2 otherwise. Another player making a difference was Jason Love, who dropped a double-double on 16 points and 14 boards.

San Diego Academy is on a roll lately: they've won eight of their last nine games, which provided a nice bump to their 10-4 record this season. As for Cristo Rey, the win made it two in a row for them and bumps their season record up to 3-8.

Cristo Rey was able to grind out a solid victory over San Diego Academy when the teams last played back in February of 2023, winning 48-39. The rematch might be a little tougher for Cristo Rey since the team won't have the home-court advantage this time around. We'll see if the change in venue makes a difference.
