Marshall hasn't had much luck against Effingham recently, but that could start to change on Wednesday. The Lions will look to defend their home field against the Hearts at 4:30 p.m. The teams are on pretty different trajectories at the moment (Marshall has seven straight wins, Effingham has three straight losses), but none of that matters once you're on the field.
Marshall proved they can win big two weeks ago (they won by 18) and last Tuesday they proved they can win the close ones too. They came out on top in a nail-biter against Robinson, sneaking past 4-3. Those four runs were actually the fewest the Lions have put up all season, but given the result they're probably not too concerned.
The team relied heavily on Lynn Welborn, who scored two runs and stole three bases while getting on base in four of her six plate appearances. That's the most stolen bases she has posted since back in April of 2024. McKenzie Davis was another key player, going 1-for-5 with one home run and two RBI.
Meanwhile, Effingham came up short against Mt. Zion on Tuesday, falling 9-3. For those keeping track at home, that's the biggest defeat the Hearts have suffered against the Braves since May 22, 2021.
Keagyn Koenig was cooking despite her team's loss, going 2-for-3 with one home run, two RBI, and one double. That double was her first of the season. The team also got some help courtesy of Saige Althoff, who went 2-for-3 with two stolen bases.
Marshall pushed their record up to 7-0 with the victory, which was their 12th straight at home dating back to last season. As for Effingham, their loss dropped their record down to 2-4.
Effingham's pitching crew has a crucial task ahead of them: Marshall has hit smart this season, having averaged an OBP of .459. It's a different story for Effingham, though, as they've only averaged .337. Will they be able to contain Marshall's hitters?
Marshall might still be hurting after the 15-5 defeat they got from Effingham when the teams last played back in March of 2024. Will the Lions have more luck at home instead of on the road? Check MaxPreps after the action for a full breakdown of the game and more softball content.
