Sevier County's win was the result of several impressive offensive performances. One of the most notable came from Nathan Patterson, who rushed for 130 yards and a pair of scores. Those 130 rushing yards gave Patterson a new career-high. Cooper Newman was another key passer, throwing for 235 yards and two TDs.
Meanwhile, Halls earned a 28-21 win over Knoxville Central on Friday.
Halls' win came from a few key players Sevier County will need to keep an eye on. One of the most notable was Amari Lethgo, who threw for 267 yards and three touchdowns, and also punched in one score on the ground. Halls is undefeated when Lethgo posts three or more passing touchdowns, but 3-4 otherwise. Brody Rogers was in the mix as well, providing the Red Devils with two TDs.
One reason for the win was Halls' imposing defense, which managed to get into the backfield for five sacks. Carson Pearce was particularly dangerous to the passing game, picking up four himself. Pearce is also crushing it when it comes to total tackles: he's made at least seven every time he's taken the field this season. Gavin Self was another major factor on D, picking up a sack and making 14 total tackles.
Sevier County's record is now 12-1. As for Halls, their record now sits at 8-4.
Friday's matchup will pit two of the most dominant signal callers against one another: Newman and Lethgo. Newman just won't slow down this season and has thrown 41 touchdowns (and and only 4 picks) while averaging 250.4 passing yards per game. Lethgo has been a dominant force too and has thrown 28 touchdowns while averaging 238.8 passing yards per game.
Sevier County was able to grind out a solid victory over Halls in their previous matchup back in September of 2022, winning 7-0. Will the Smoky Bears repeat their success, or do the Red Devils have a new game plan this time around? We'll find out soon enough.
