The Hunterdon Central Red Devils pushed their score all the way to 59 on Monday, but even that wasn't enough to win. They took a 68-59 hit to the loss column at the hands of Phillipsburg. While losing is never fun, Hunterdon Central can't take it too hard given the team's big disadvantage in MaxPreps' New Jersey basketball rankings (they are ranked 62nd, while Phillipsburg is ranked 15th).
Phillipsburg's win was a true team effort, with many players turning in solid performances. Perhaps the best among them was Matthew Scerbo jr., who scored 33 points. That makes it four consecutive games in which Scerbo jr. has scored at least a third of Phillipsburg's points. Ameer Herran was another key contributor, scoring 17 points along with seven rebounds and two steals.
Hunterdon Central's loss dropped their record down to 18-9. As for Phillipsburg, they pushed their record up to 21-2 with that win, which was their ninth straight on the road.
Both squads are looking forward to the support of their home crowds in their upcoming games. Hunterdon Central won't have much time to rest: their next match is against The Pingry School at 7:00 p.m. on February 13th. The Pingry School will roll in looking for their sixth straight victory, something Hunterdon Central surely won't give up without a fight. As for Phillipsburg, they will look to defend their home court on Wednesday against North Hunterdon at 5:15 p.m.
