Softball Game Preview: Westfield Shamrocks vs. Greenfield-Central Cougars

Westfield is 0-6 against Greenfield-Central since April of 2015 but things could change on Wednesday. The Shamrocks will host the Cougars at 6:00 p.m. Westfield is strutting in with some hitting muscle as they've averaged 7 runs per game this season.

Westfield came up short against Brownsburg on Tuesday, falling 15-5.

Makayla Watson made the most of her time at bat despite the final result and scored a run and stole a base while going 1-for-1. She also put up an RBI, which was her first of the season. Sofia Easterhaus was another key player, scoring two runs and stealing a base while getting on base in two of her three plate appearances.

Meanwhile, there's no place like home for Greenfield-Central, who bounced back after a loss on the road on Thursday. They won by a run and slipped past Madison-Grant 7-6.

Greenfield-Central also got a great performance from Addie Heacox as she pitched 6.2 innings while giving up just two earned runs off six hits. Heacox has been consistent recently: she hasn't given up more than two walks in three consecutive appearances.

At the plate, Savvanna Riall was incredible, scoring two runs and stealing a base while going 3-for-4. The dominant performance also gave her a new career-high in doubles (two). Another player making a difference was Josie White, who scored three runs and stole a base while going 2-for-4.

Westfield's loss dropped their record down to 2-2. As for Greenfield-Central, the victory also got them back to even at 2-2.

Greenfield-Central's pitching crew has a crucial task ahead of them: Westfield has been making plenty of contact this season, having averaged 8.8 hits per game. It's a different story for Greenfield-Central, though, as they've been averaging 12.5 hits. Given Westfield's sizable advantage in that area, the Cougars will need to find a way to close that gap.

Westfield might still be hurting after the 19-12 defeat they got from Greenfield-Central in their previous matchup back in April of 2023. Can the Shamrocks avenge their loss or is history doomed to repeat itself? We'll find out soon enough.
