The Sumner Stingrays and the Plant Panthers squared off in some playoff action on Friday, but sadly the Sumner Stingrays had to settle for second. They fell to the Panthers 20-14. It was the first time this season that Sumner let down their fans at home.
Despite the loss, Sumner still got an impressive performance from Malik Brown, who picked up 152 receiving yards and two touchdowns. Brown's longest reception was for an incredible 78 yards.
Plant was led to victory by Waltez Clark and Jc Mirasola. Clark gained 107 total yards and a touchdown, while Mirasola threw for 175 yards and a touchdown while completing 100% of his passes.
The team's defense also helped out by holding Sumner to a paltry 214 yards. A big part of that defensive dominance came down to Plant's ability to keep the quarterback under pressure: the team laid the passer out six times before it was all said and done. Alex Tate was especially locked on to Sumner's QB and sacked him four times.
Sumner's loss dropped their record down to 11-2. As for Plant, the victory (which was their 11th in a row) raised their record to 11-2.
Sumner does not have any more games scheduled as of now. Plant will head out on the road to face off against Columbus at 6:00 p.m. on Friday. The two teams have allowed few points on average, (Columbus: 11, Plant: 12.2) so any points scored will be well earned.
