Alexander Central is 10-0 against Watauga since January of 2019, and they'll have a chance to extend that success on Tuesday. The Alexander Central Cougars will be staying on the road to face off against the Watauga Pioneers at 8:00 p.m. on January 16th. Given that the pair suffered a loss in their last game, they both have a little extra motivation heading into this contest.
Last Friday, Alexander Central was within striking distance but couldn't close the gap as they fell 54-48 to Ashe County.
Despite their defeat, Alexander Central saw several players rise to the challenge and make noteworthy plays. Chad Lasher, who scored 16 points along with six rebounds, was perhaps the best of all. Carter Fortner was another key contributor, scoring 11 points.
Meanwhile, after a string of three wins, Watauga's good fortune finally ran out on Saturday. They fell just short of East Forsyth by a score of 67-65. For those keeping track at home, that's the closest loss Watauga has suffered yet this season.
Josiah Railey put forth a good effort for the losing side as he scored 19 points along with seven rebounds and six assists. Another player making a difference was Wyatt Kohout, who scored 15 points along with two steals.
Alexander Central has been struggling recently, as they've lost four of their last five games, which put a noticeable dent in their 6-9 record this season. As for Watauga, their loss dropped their record down to 11-4.
Some high-performance offense is likely on the agenda as both teams are some of the highest scoring teams in the league. Alexander Central hasn't had any problem running up the score this season, having only averaged 54.9 points per game. It's a different story for Watauga, though, as they've been averaging only 68.1 points per game. With both teams so easily able to put up points, the only question left is who can run the score up higher.
Alexander Central skirted past Watauga 39-37 when the teams last played back in January of 2023. Will Alexander Central repeat their success, or does Watauga have a new game plan this time around? We'll find out soon enough.
