Nick Mangrum was a one-man wrecking crew as he rushed for 69 yards and three scores, and also threw for 79 yards and a pair of touchdowns. Those 69 rushing yards gave him a new career-high. Dylan McIntyre was another key player, rushing for 80 yards and one TD on only nine carries.
Wins are hard to come by when you can't run the rock, something Mt. Shasta proved: they limited Weed to a paltry 0.7 yards per carry. The team can thank McIntyre for the heroic effort on defense: he. Mt. Shasta's run defense has been on the up-and-up: they allowed 3.6 yards per carry earlier this season, but they've only allowed 4.3 on average over their last five games.
Mt. Shasta's defense didn't let Braeden Cordes, get away unscathed either: they got into the backfield for four sacks. In that department, McIntyre was the leader with two.
Meanwhile, after soaring to 34 points the game before, Etna was a bit more limited in their matchup on Friday. They fell 18-6 to Fall River. While the Lions had to settle for second, they closed the game well in the third quarter, where they outscored the Bulldogs 6-0.
Mt. Shasta will have to keep a close watch on Chance Perez and Hank Hayden, a pair of players who had a big impact on Etna's prior game. Perez picked up 103 receiving yards and one touchdown, while Hayden rushed for 58 yards on only seven carries. Perez also deserves a shoutout for his performance on D, making three total tackles and defending one pass.
Etna didn't go easy on the quarterback and picked off two passes before the game was over. The picks came courtesy of Shaun Dresser and Carter Isbell.
Etna's loss dropped their record down to 1-5. As for Mt. Shasta, their win ended a seven-game drought on the road dating back to last season and puts them at 3-3.
Friday's game might be decided in the trenches. Mt. Shasta has been excellent on the ground this season, having averaged 160.3 rushing yards per game. It's a different story for Etna, though, as they've been averaging only 81.2 rushing yards. How will they fare against such a dominant running game?
Mt. Shasta took a serious blow against Etna in their previous meeting back in October of 2024, falling 49-6. That contest was all but decided by halftime, at which point the Bears were down 28-0.
