Football Recap: Ty Jansma Leads a Balanced Attack to Beat Armstrong

Canon-McMillan won the last time they faced Armstrong and things went their way on Friday too. The Big Macs walked away with a 31-21 victory over the River Hawks. Given the Big Macs' advantage in MaxPreps' Pennsylvania football rankings (they are ranked 45th, while the River Hawks are ranked 137th) , the result wasn't entirely unexpected.

Canon-McMillan got their win on the backs of several key players, but it was Ty Jansma out in front who threw for 254 yards and three TDs. Those 254 passing yards gave Jansma a new career-high. Canon-McMillan's leading receiver Ethan Campoli was Jansma's top target yet again, picking up 147 receiving yards and a pair of touchdowns.

Canon-McMillan's run defense was locked in: Armstrong could only muster 2.7 yards per carry. The team can thank Brayden Collins for the heroic effort on defense: he. Canon-McMillan's ground attack was stronger, having averaged 5.1.

Canon-McMillan didn't go easy on the quarterback and picked off two passes before the game was over. The picks came courtesy of Campoli and Matthew Hirsch.

Armstrong lost despite a true team effort on offense. The best among them was Quinton Olsen, who picked up 116 receiving yards and two scores. Another passer making a difference was Deo Beck, who threw for 302 yards and three TDs.

The victory got Canon-McMillan back to even at 2-2. As for Armstrong, this is the second loss in a row for them and nudges their season record down to 1-3.

Both teams are looking forward to the support of their home crowds in their upcoming games. Canon-McMillan will challenge Mt. Lebanon at 7:00 p.m. on Friday. The Big Macs will be up against the Blue Devils' rather soft defense (which has allowed 38.25 points per game), so fans could be in store for a big offensive performance. As for Armstrong, they will face off against Greater Latrobe at 7:00 p.m. on Friday. The match will give the River Hawks their first taste of in-conference action this season.
