Cumberland had lost eight straight at home dating back to last season, but on Tuesday they dropped their record down to 2-11 to make it nine. They lost 14-5 to the Nottoway Cougars. The home team had taken home the W every time these teams have met since April 27, 2023, but that streak is no more.
Ayden Brodie was cooking despite his team's loss, going 3-for-4 with four RBI, one run, and one double. Another player making a difference was David Sullivan Jr, who went 2-for-3 with two runs, one stolen base, and one double.
As for Nottoway, their win ended a 14-game drought on the road dating back to last season and puts them at 4-10. Their hitters stepped up their game for this one, as that was the most runs they've scored all season.
On Nottoway's side, Trent Hayes was a major factor while hitting and pitching. He looked comfortable on the mound, keeping things locked down with no earned runs or hits while striking out 12 over 5.1 innings pitched. Hayes also allowed no hits, which is notable because Nottoway is 2-1 when he allows at most one hit, but 2-9 otherwise. Hayes was also big at the plate, going 1-for-3 with two stolen bases and two runs.
In other batting news, Jahmarion Wright was incredible, going 2-for-3 with two runs, one triple, and one stolen base. The dominant performance also gave him a new career-high in RBI (two). Bradley Hamilton was another key player, getting on base in three of his four plate appearances with two stolen bases and one run.
Both squads will have to hit the road in their upcoming games. Cumberland will challenge Amelia County at 5:00 p.m. on Tuesday. As for Nottoway, they will square off against Buckingham at 5:00 p.m. on Thursday. The Knights will roll in looking for their 12th straight victory, something the Cougars surely won't give up without a fight.
