The Payson Longhorns have been a dominant force so far, but they're in the middle of a mini-slump at the moment. They fell just short of Holbrook by a score of 40-37. That's two games in a row now that Payson has lost by exactly three points.
Payson's loss on Wednesday came despite strong showings from Grace Deschaaf and Mylee Redford. Deschaaf dropped a double-double on 12 points and ten rebounds, while Redford scored eight points. As a matter of fact, that's the most points Deschaaf has scored all season. The team also got some help courtesy of Chloe Hancock, who scored five points.
Holbrook had a senior duo take command as Noheah Aberle scored 20 points along with seven rebounds and two steals and Raelle Yazzie scored ten points along with seven rebounds and two steals. Aberle is on a roll when it comes to steals, as she's now grabbed two or more in the last four games she's played.
Payson has been struggling recently as they've lost three of their last four matchups, which put a noticeable dent in their 16-9 record this season. As for Holbrook, their victory ended a eight-game drought on the road dating back to last season and puts them at 9-17.
Both squads will have to hit the road in their upcoming games. Payson and the Yellow Jackets will face off at 1:00 p.m. on February 3rd without much rest after finishing up games yesterday. Blue Ridge has been getting the ball to fall more lately as they've increased their point totals each of their last four games. As for Holbrook, they will head out on the road to face off against the Bulldogs at 6:00 p.m. on Friday.
