Greg Monroe, rated the No. 1 basketball player in the country by some scouting services, made a commitment over the weekend to attend Georgetown University. The 6-10, 230-pound senior from Helen Cox in Harvey, La., will have a chance to some day be ranked alongside such former Georgetown greats as Patrick Ewing and Alonzo Mourning.
Monroe averaged 19.4 points, 12.4 rebounds, 3.0 blocks and 2.8 assists as a junior. He had high games of 32 points, 22 rebounds and 10 blocks. As a sophomore, he averaged 18.5 points, 12.2 rebounds, 2.5 blocks and 2.3 assists.
Coach Tyrone Mouzon calls "versatility" Monroe's greatest asset. "He's under the radar," Mouzon laughed. "He's so quiet and he's in deep football country."
Monroe also had considered LSU, Connecticut, Duke and Texas. He cancelled official visits which had been scheduled later this month to Duke and Texas.
Another high-profile senior made a move of a different kind. Standout guard Willie Warren has left powerhouse Oak Hill Academy (Mouth of Wilson, Va.). He transferred to Oak Hill this fall, but appears headed back to his old high school, North Crowley in Fort Worth, Texas. As a junior the 6-3 Warren averaged 23.2 points and 4.7 assists.
