Basketball Recap: Lawrence Central Picks Up Fourth Consecutive Victory

Lawrence Central had already won three in a row (a stretch where they outscored their opponents by an average of 15.7 points) and they went ahead and made it four on Thursday. They took down the Southport Cardinals 73-55. This was a revenge game for the Bears: when they faced off against the Cardinals back in January, they had to take a 54-52 defeat.

Leading Lawrence Central to victory were Nizyi Davis and Doron Harris. Davis shot 70% from the field to rack up 21 points and three steals, while Harris made all 7 shots he took racking up 18 points. Davis' big performance that evening made it three games in a row in which he has scored at least 18 points. The team also got some help courtesy of Anthony Sowell, who posted nine points.

Loss or not, Southport got some senior leadership from Jack Turner and Ty'Reese Burnett. Turner went 8-for-15 en route to 22 points, while Burnett shot 71% from the field on his way to 13 points and five rebounds. What's more, Turner also posted a 57% three-point shooting accuracy, which is the highest he's achieved since back in November of 2024. Another player making a difference was Cristian Webster, who earned eight points.

Lawrence Central pushed their record up to 12-9 with the victory, which was their third straight at home. The wins came thanks in part to their offensive performance across that stretch, as they averaged 76.3 points over those games. As for Southport, they have traveled a rocky road recently, having lost four of their last five matchups. That's put a noticeable dent in their 11-11 record this season.

Lawrence Central and Southport are set to take part in some playoff action in their next matches. Lawrence Central will take on Lawrence North at 7:00 p.m. on Tuesday. One thing working in Lawrence North's favor is that they have posted at least 55 points in their last 12 contests. As for Southport, they will square off against Decatur Central at 6:00 p.m. on Tuesday. Southport has given up an average of 55 points per game this season, so hopefully the team got some defensive drills in this week.
