Softball Game Preview: Punxsutawney Chucks vs. Philipsburg-Osceola Mountaineers

Punxsutawney is 1-7 against Philipsburg-Osceola since May of 2015 but they'll have a chance to close the gap a little bit on Wednesday. The Chucks will welcome the Mountaineers at 4:30 p.m. Punxsutawney will be strutting in after a win while Philipsburg-Osceola will be coming in after a defeat.

Punxsutawney's pitching crew heads into the match hoping to repeat the dominance they displayed on Monday. They were the clear victors by a 9-0 margin over West Shamokin. The victory made it back-to-back wins for the Chucks.

Brynn Hergert was incredible, going 2-for-4 with one home run, three RBI, and two runs. Those three RBI gave her a new career-high. The team also got some help courtesy of Avary Powell, who went 2-for-4 with one home run, four RBI, and two runs.

Hergert wasn't the only one working in the hit department: Punxsutawney kept the outfield on their toes and finished the game with 11 hits. They easily outclassed their opponents in that department as West Shamokin only managed three hits.

Meanwhile, Philipsburg-Osceola suffered their biggest loss since March 28, 2024 on Tuesday. They lost 13-3 to Bald Eagle Area. The defeat continues a trend for the Mountaineers in their meetings with the Eagles: they've now lost six in a row.

Emily Gustkey was cooking despite her team's loss, scoring two runs and stealing a base while going 1-for-2. She has been hot recently, having posted at least one stolen base the last three times she's played. Another player making a difference was Morgan Vaughn, who scored a run while going 2-for-3.

Philipsburg-Osceola's loss was their first in the conference, dropping their conference record down to 2-1 and their overall record down to 4-3. As for Punxsutawney, they now have a winning record of 2-1.
