Thomas Adams tied things up at 51 with one minute remaining and
completed the Sandia 9-0 run to close out regulation.
Although
Volcano Vista was looking to hold for the last shot on the other end,
the defense forced a turnover before a 3-point attempt from
Isaiah Brown
rimmed out as time expired.
Saturday night was high drama at The Pit in Albuquerque as Volcano Vista
scored the first five points of overtime to surge ahead 56-51.
Zaire Ndyabagye of Sandia answered with a layup to cut the deficit to three with 1:54 remaining. But those would be the only points of the extra stanza for the Matadors as they were held scoreless for the final 114 seconds.
The Hawks held their biggest advantage of the game at 49-40
with 3:36 remaining in the fourth quarter following a 3-pointer from the
top of the key from
Hudson Brown.
Volcano Vista (29-2) shot 20 of 39 from the field and 6 of 12 from 3-point range in the victory. Sandia (27-4) shot 17 of 48 from the field and 10 of 27 from 3-point range.
Adams finished with a team-high 17 points in the loss. Ndyabagye added 15 points, seven rebounds and four steals and
Gad Harris had 14 points, five rebounds, five assists and four steals.
