The Courtland Cougars had already won seven in a row (a stretch where they outscored their opponents by an average of 16.1 points), and they went ahead and made it eight on Wednesday. They secured a 50-44 W over Mountain View. Given Courtland's advantage in MaxPreps' Virginia basketball rankings (they are ranked 146th, while the Wildcats are ranked 323rd), the result wasn't entirely unexpected.
Jaylen Brooks was his usual excellent self, scoring 24 points along with five rebounds and four steals. As a matter of fact, that's the most points he has scored all season. Kevin Bautista was another key contributor, scoring 12 points along with two steals.
Courtland's win was their fourth straight on the road, which pushed their record up to 14-5. As for Mountain View, they have not been sharp recently as the team's lost eight of their last nine games, which put a noticeable dent in their 4-16 record this season.
Courtland will head out on the road to challenge the Yellow Jackets at 6:30 p.m. on Friday. James Monroe knows how to get points on the board -- the squad has finished with flashy point totals in its past 18 matches -- so hopefully the Cougars like a good challenge. As for Mountain View, they will be playing at home against the Wolverines at 6:30 p.m. on Monday.
