High school baseball: Oklahoma dominates list of teams with 75 home runs or more in a season

"Oklahoma, where the wind comes sweeping down the plain," might be more than just a line from a Broadway musical, it could provide insight on why so many home runs are hit in the Sooner State.

"The wind is usually always blowing in Oklahoma. If you listen to our state song, it has it in it," said Timothy LaValley, head coach at Carl Albert (Midwest City, Okla.) when asked by MaxPreps to give a possible reason for the high high school baseball home run totals from the state. "Most fields in Oklahoma are set north or south. In March, usually, we have north winds that help carry the ball out. In April, the wind is usually out of the south and has the same effect."

Whatever the reason, Oklahoma teams top the list of high school baseball teams with the most home runs in a single season, as compiled by MaxPreps.

Roff, which had five players with 14 or more home runs in 2010, leads the pack with 131 homers while Rock Creek (Bokchito, Okla.) has posted seasons with 113, 105 and 92 home runs.

In fact, Rock Creek, then coached by the nation's all-time wins leader Billy Jack Bowen (now at Silo), hit 548 home runs from the fall 1996 to the spring 2000. That included 80 in the fall and spring of 1996-97, 92 in 1997-98, 165 in 1998-99 and 218 in 1999-2000.

Most of the teams on the list, which includes any team with 75 or more home runs in a season, accomplished their totals around the 1999-2001 seasons or the 2009-2011 seasons. No team in the nation had hit 75 or more home runs in a season since, until now.

Danville (Ky.), which is 35-3 and alive in the state playoff race, leads the nation with 78 home runs and has the top two home run hitters in the country in Christian Howe (18) and Ethan Wood (17).
